What We’ve Done

  • Bought an $85,000 bus, the “Silver Streak,” to transport seniors to events both on- and off-island.
  • Purchased five durable teak benches and provided materials for the construction of a custom mahogany picnic table for the Lions Centennial Pavilion at Wades Beach.
  • Supported the remodeling of the Wades Beach bathhouse for the storage of a large-wheeled, floating wheelchair that is used by the lifeguards to transport disabled persons through soft beach sand, into and out of the water.
  • Became a vanguard supporter of the Shelter Island Library’s expansion and renovation to ensure senior-friendly areas and programs.
  • Initiated a campaign to raise the funds to help upgrade the Presbyterian Church’s kitchen, the heart of the Senior Services’ nutrition program, including its Meals on Wheels and Dinner Bell.
  • Subsidized the Community Thanksgiving Dinners and St. Mary’s Community Christmas Dinners, including home-delivered meals to seniors.
  • Provided meals and snacks for personnel helping with the COVID vaccination site at the Shelter Island School.
  • Sent senior citizens to the Shelter Island Historical Society’s summer musicals for the past two years.
  • Paid for tickets for seniors to attend the Shelter Island School’s production of “Mamma Mia!”
  • Provided medical alert systems for senior citizens who needed them to ensure their peace of mind, safety and security.
  • Purchasing iPads for use at the Senior Center.
  • Paid for the musical entertainment at the Senior Barbecue.
